Workshops with Drummers
Most workshops have 10 to 12 drumming students of varying levels. David starts the day by introducing patterns in different rhythms - first with the entire group in unison and gradually building towards parts. Students who have worked with David before and know the patterns find new insights by playing in combination. Students learning patterns for the first time find a supportive group.
David's work always builds on fundamental elements. Every workshop starts with simple musical statements and builds to the level that the group is able to attain, given the skill with which they entered the workshop.
Most students own their drums, although David keeps a good supply for those who do not.
To add to the richness - drumming workshops sometimes include dance and song. Drum, dance and song are only different ways of expressing the music that lives within us.
"Drumming is for any level of ability. We have let the professionals do it for us for far too long! Talent is only what you have and what you do with it".
"When you start with fundamentals, you can ultimately play any rhythm - any genre - any patterns. I have played and accompanied Senegalese music, jazz, "avant-garde", Big Band, salsa, arabic, gypsy rumba, celtic, combia, reggae, bhangra, samba, greek, ska .....".
"My method of teaching is unique. Believe me, it does work! I just naturally bring the joy that drumming gives me. Then we start simple and grow. With a group of any size, we can be playing in unison within 15 minutes! When we start simple, people remember what they learned. That animates me".
