David Thiaw's
Workshop Guide
to Djembe drum playing features his unique teaching method.

This practice book with accompanying CD is a
treasure trove of resources, containing information
procedures on choosing and caring for your drum, correcting playing procdures, rhythms, breaks, and practice sequences. The 36 exercise tracks on the CD
are cued to shadow the book's contests.

Some of the 4/4 rhythms featured:

Bayano Taught to me by my grandmother, this rhythm is very popular in Brazil soft, compelling.

Tschepp A Sabar pattern (hand and stick drumming)
transferred to Djembe.

Merengue This rhythm was brought to North America by slaves and made popular in Haiti, Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Ga From the Ga people of Ghana, this is celebration
drumming (bells, call and response).

Morna A dance and song pattern of Portuguese origin, it developed in Senegal, Guinea Bissao and the Cabo Verde Islands.

Some of the breaks featured:

3-2 Clave This is the most widely known clave pattern.

Universal A verbose break.  This is the most widely used Djembe break.

Conga Line In Africa it is associated with Goumbay, a popular merry making dance.
