"Glimpses of Africa"
/ "Regards Sur L'Afrique" best describes the performance
of David Thiaw*, a master percussionist, an engaging storyteller,
singer musician, composer, teacher, linguist and recently, an
author.
He introduces his audience to the very
unique instruments from Africa and retells the wonderful folk
stories that have been handed down for centuries. David uses
his rich voice to sing about the people, the customs and the
animals of his country. The children are in awe of the beautiful
costumes and excited when they can participate in the rhythms
and the songs. They can also do a 'hands
on' with they wide array of drums and other African instruments.

David Thiaw is
first and foremost a percussionist of remarkable talent, he is
also a singer, storyteller, composer, linguist, teacher, drum
craftsman and the leader of Domba, an Afro Jazz Group.
African and World music have been David's
lifelong passion. The roots of David's music and teaching
reach back to his boyhood in Senegal, aptly called "the
land of drummers".
His influences include such notable musicians
as Ladji Kamara, who later became a member of the Martha Graham
Dance Company, Zak Diouf, who was the resource person for Quincy
Jones on the music score for Roots, and
Manfila Kante, the legendary singer, composer and guitarist.
David formed his first drum and dance
troupe when he was fourteen.
Later, he travelled through Africa, Europe, North and South America,
exploring the diversity of African culture and music in those
areas.
Since his arrival in western Canada, David has focused on:
introducing African music and culture
into the school system through:
David's talents as an educator are becoming
widely known and utilized by Choral Societies, Junior and Adult
Choirs, Jazz Bands, Elementary and Junior High Schools.
"It is clear that this artist
not only moves the spirit of young people but can lead an older
audience into a deeper appreciation of the drum and the story.
David Thiaw demonstrates a stage presence, sensitivity and sense
of humour which endears him to those who are open to a newer,
larger more integrated multi-cultural society."
